The credit union was founded by nine teachers from the School District of Greenville County as an educator’s credit union in 1968. As a not-for-profit alternative to traditional banking, Greenville Federal Credit Union members enjoy more money-saving advantages, including higher returns on deposits, lower loan rates, and fewer fees overall. The credit union offers traditional consumer deposit and loan services as well as free financial counseling and other wellness benefits. The credit union also offers commercial deposit and loan services and business support resources. As a priority, the credit union serves members by utilizing the latest in digital banking and financial technology including online and mobile banking, bill pay, and mobile deposit, and security features including two-factor authentication, biometric authentication, 24/7 fraud monitoring, and automated account security.

Since its inception Greenville Federal Credit Union has placed a strong emphasis on supporting local children and educators through community outreach initiatives. Credit union members and employees actively volunteer time and resources with many local organizations. Whether sponsoring programs for Greenville County Schools that impact teachers and students or raising money for the Prisma Health System Children’s Hospital, the credit union is committed to providing local support to the people who need it.

Greenville Federal Credit Union enjoys strong community support and brand identity. For seven years running, it has been voted The Greenville News “Best in the Upstate, Best Credit Union,” and has recently ranked among Forbes Magazine “America’s Best Credit Unions” list for South Carolina. Of the 5,236 credit unions nationwide, just 3.5% made the Forbes list in 2020. Credit union President Paul Hughes attributes the consecutive nominations and awards to a very enthusiastic member base. “Our members are proud to recognize their credit union among the best. But it’s our members who truly make us the best, and we are grateful to them for their continued loyalty and support. These accolades affirm our mission to always put members first.”

Greenville Federal Credit Union is truly a low-cost alternative to traditional banking. We have all the services found at traditional banks but we are fundamentally different in that our account holders are also owners. Our philosophical difference is huge - we view and treat our members as owners, not as potential sources of income. As a not-for-profit entity, our focus has always been to help our members prosper by providing money-saving advantages and reasonably priced financial services.
